Spotlight
Rajeev Darolia is the Wendell H. Ford Professor of Public Policy and Economics in the Martin School of Public Policy and Administration at the University of Kentucky. He currently also serves as Associate Director of UKCPR.
Raj joined the Martin School in 2017 as associate professor from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and was promoted to full professor in 2022. In 2024-2025 he served as Chief Economist and Senior Advisor in the U.S. Department of Education, where he spearheaded efforts to conduct research and evaluation, inform policy decisions, and develop large-scale research datasets. Leading the Office of the Chief Economist followed his service as a Senior Advisor in the Office of the Undersecretary the year prior, and previous experience serving as an advisor for federal rule-making related to affordability and student loans.
His broad research agenda includes questions about how public policy affects educational decisions and outcomes, and more broadly, economic mobility and financial security. Recent projects include studies about the efficiency of public human capital investments, and the costs and benefits of a variety of education and workforce pathways. Many of his research projects are developed in partnership with policymakers and practitioners in Kentucky and beyond.
He currently serves as a Co-Editor for the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.
